Religious Education

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School promotes a rich religious dimension that is deeply embedded in the life of the school.

This dimension is best characterised by our Christian actions towards one another, our practice of faith and our shared hope for the future. Recognising that parents are the primary faith educators of their children, the school works in partnership with families and the parish to support families in guiding their children’s faith development. Religious Education is firmly upheld as the first learning area, reflecting its central role in the formation and holistic development of students in Catholic schools. All classrooms are led by Catholic teachers who approach the teaching of Religious Education with the same depth, rigour and professionalism as other learning areas.

The Religious Education Program is a central feature of daily school life and distinguishes St Joseph’s from other schools. Children from Pre-Kindergarten to Year Six actively participate in the program, which follows a circular teaching process. Students are encouraged to discover God through life experiences, reflect on God’s teachings as demonstrated by Jesus and respond with thoughtful action. The curriculum is based on the Religious Education Units of Work and presents Gospel values in a way that is accessible and meaningful to students. Liturgical and sacramental celebrations are also integral to the school’s spiritual life, offering opportunities for the community to respond to God through inclusive Masses and Liturgies. These events are designed to welcome all children and families, regardless of religious background.

Sacramental preparation is a collaborative effort between parents, the parish and the school. Baptised Catholic students are invited to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation during the school year. This journey is supported through shared learning and celebration. Additionally, service learning is embedded in the school’s ethos, exemplified by the students’ involvement with the Pinjarra Community Kitchen. This initiative enriches the values-driven education offered at St Joseph’s, fostering compassion, empathy and a commitment to social justice.
